DescriptionDaikoji Temple’s Tsuchibotoke Kannon Hall enshrines a small Sho Kannon image made of clay, approximately 14 cm high. Known as both “Tsuchibotoke Kannon” and “Kubitsugi Kannon,” this modest image has long been handed down as one of Daikoji’s principal objects of devotion. Daikoji is a Soto Zen temple founded in 1381 by the monk Baizan, and the temple grounds include the Tsuchibotoke Kannon Hall. Unlike monumental or richly decorated Buddhist statues, this site offers a sense of long-standing local faith through the simple form of a clay image. Advance inquiry is required to view inside the temple.
