Description

Torakuji Temple in Tamayama, Morioka, preserves a standing wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Iwate Prefecture. The monumental figure stands 360.6 cm high and is carved from a single piece of harigiri wood, dating to the Heian period. Torakuji preserves nine Heian-period Buddhist images, centered on Eleven-Faced Kannon statues formerly worshipped around the foothills of Mt. Himekami, and this is the principal figure among them. The Iwate tourism association introduces it as one of Tohoku’s outstanding Buddhist statues. Being able to view a single-block Eleven-Faced Kannon more than 3.6 meters high in person makes this an impressive Buddhist destination closely connected with devotion to Mt. Himekami.
