DescriptionThis group of wooden Raigo Amida and bodhisattva images in Matsukawa, Higashiyama, Ichinoseki, is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Iwate Prefecture. Thought to have been created by Buddhist sculptors from the capital in the late Heian period, the ensemble depicts in three-dimensional sculpture the raigo scene in which Amida Nyorai and twenty-five bodhisattvas descend from the Pure Land to welcome the deceased, making it a nationally rare sculptural group. Traces of former gold leaf remain on the bodhisattva figures, showing a close relationship with Hiraizumi culture. Although the images are heavily damaged and none of the bodhisattvas survives in fully intact form, visitors can still see this rare surviving ensemble of numerous sculptures representing the raigo scene at the original site.
