DescriptionYakushi Nyorai is enshrined as the principal image of Motsuji Temple’s Main Hall. The present Main Hall was rebuilt in 1989, with Yakushi Nyorai at the center and Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu as attendant figures. According to temple tradition, Motsuji began in 850 when Jikaku Daishi Ennin visited the area and, guided by a white-haired old man whom he perceived as a manifestation of Yakushi Nyorai, built a hall here. Yakushi Nyorai is therefore deeply connected with the temple’s founding legend. The image continues to be revered for prayers for health and recovery from illness and can normally be worshipped from in front of the Main Hall. A special viewing inside the Main Hall is scheduled for October 1–20, 2026.
