Description

The standing wooden Amida Nyorai enshrined on the Shumidan altar of Chotokuji Temple’s Main Hall as its principal image is a Tangible Cultural Property designated by Iwate Prefecture. The statue is 84.4 cm high and is made by a split-and-joined construction method from what is thought to be hinoki or hiba wood, with crystal eyes, lacquer and gold leaf, and partial polychrome decoration. Dating to the Kamakura period, its robes, head, and facial expression preserve the orthodox style of Amida sculpture, and it is highly regarded as a representative example of Kamakura-period sculpture in Iwate. It was designated an Iwate Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property on November 14, 2017. The image remains the temple’s principal object of worship; when the priest is available, visitors are guided into the Main Hall to worship before it. Advance contact is recommended for a guaranteed visit.
