DescriptionThe seated wooden Kannon Bosatsu preserved at Tosen-in Temple in Daito, Ichinoseki, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. About 114 cm high, it is made from joined pieces of conifer wood and finished with lacquer and gold leaf, and dates to the late Heian period. The statue came from the former Kannonji Temple, traditionally said to have been founded by Fujiwara no Hidehira, and is thought to have been made by a Buddhist sculptor involved in temple construction under the three generations of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. Similarities have also been noted with the Buddhist images on the Fujiwara no Motohira altar in Chusonji’s Konjikido. The halo, pedestal, and statue survive together in unusually good condition. With advance reservation, visitors can view this important 12th-century image in person within the cultural sphere of Hiraizumi.
