DescriptionThe seated wooden Amida Nyorai enshrined at Shokoin Temple in Kajimachi, Hanamaki, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The monumental Kamakura-period image is 186.3 cm high, made in joined-wood construction, finished with lacquer and gold leaf, fitted with crystal eyes, and forms the meditation mudra of Amida. During the Genroku era it was brought from Higashiyama in Kyoto together with its two attendant images and is said to have been consecrated by Yuten Shonin in Edo before being enshrined in Hanamaki. Normally viewable by advance application, it offers the opportunity to see a Kamakura-period Amida more than 1.8 meters high in person.
