Description

Hoonji Temple’s Rakan Hall in Morioka houses the Five Hundred Rakan. Five hundred figures were originally created, of which 499 survive today. Inscriptions inside the statues show that they were made between 1731 and 1734 by nine Buddhist sculptors from Kyoto. Constructed from joined pieces of wood and finished with lacquer, each figure has a different pose and expression, and the group includes figures with distinctly foreign-looking features, creating an exceptionally varied ensemble. Designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Morioka City, the 499 figures can still be viewed by the general public filling the Rakan Hall, making the sculptural group itself a compelling reason to visit.
