DescriptionThe Fukutoku Kannon enshrined in the Great Kannon Hall of Fukusenji Temple in Tono is a monumental wooden Kannon statue 17 meters high. The temple’s second head priest commissioned it as a prayer for the repose of those who died in war and for world peace. A giant tree was brought to the temple in 1951, and after twelve years of carving the statue was completed in 1963. The entire figure is richly covered in gold leaf, and the Tono Tourism Association introduces it as the largest wooden Kannon statue in Japan. It can be viewed by the general public inside the Great Kannon Hall, where visitors can directly experience its overwhelming scale. It is the signature Buddhist attraction of Fukusenji Temple.
