DescriptionThe seated wooden Yakushi Nyorai preserved at Kokusekiji Temple is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The 126 cm figure is carved from a single piece of katsura wood and bears an inscription inside dating its creation to Jogan 4 (862), making it the only Buddhist image in Japan known with a Jogan-era inscription. Its broad shoulders and large outward-projecting ears preserve the powerful sculptural style of the early Heian period, and it is regarded as one of the outstanding ancient Buddhist images of Tohoku. Today the image can be viewed by the general public with an advance reservation and admission fee, offering a rare opportunity to see at close range a ninth-century Buddhist statue with a securely dated inscription.
