DescriptionChokoku-ji Temple in Yokoyama, Tsuyama, Tome City, preserves a wooden standing Kannon Bosatsu. Carved from a single block of keyaki wood, the nearly life-size statue stands 156 cm high and dates to the Heian period. Its narrow, sharp eyes, large nose, and strongly set lips give it a powerful expression, while the overall form has a weighty and imposing presence. At the same time, the drapery of the celestial scarf and lower garment retains soft, refined carving, combining strength with delicacy. The statue is protected as a Tangible Cultural Property of Miyagi Prefecture.
