Description

Shonen-ji Temple in Shimada, Kakuda City, preserves a wooden seated Amida Nyorai. The 50 cm statue is made of joined hinoki cypress and shows an early Kamakura-period style while retaining techniques from the late Heian period. The hands form the meditation mudra on the lap; the spiral curls and eyes are carved, and the surface is finished with lacquer and gold leaf. Tradition attributes the image to Tankei, the eldest son of Unkei, and Miyagi Prefecture notes that its quality suggests production by an accomplished sculptor from the central region. Enshrined at Shonen-ji, traditionally founded in 1467, the statue is now protected as a Tangible Cultural Property of Miyagi Prefecture.
