Description

Ankoku-ji Temple in Furukawa Kashiwazaki, Osaki City, preserves a wooden seated Amida Nyorai. The 69.7 cm statue is made of joined hinoki cypress, finished with lacquer and gold leaf, and fitted with crystal eyes. Dating to the Nanbokucho period, it shows the influence of Song-dynasty sculpture in features such as its low ushnisha. Although the sculptor is unknown, the image is thought to have been made by a Buddhist sculptor in the lineage of Unkei, and the face preserves the taut modeling of the original carving. Ankoku-ji was one of the temples established throughout Japan by Ashikaga Takauji to pray for those killed in war and for peace in the nation. The image has been preserved here as the temple’s principal image and is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Miyagi Prefecture.
