Description

Amidaji Temple in Shintera, Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai, enshrines a wooden standing Amida Nyorai as its principal image. The 78.3 cm statue is made of joined hinoki cypress and dates to the Kamakura period. Its firm, intelligent face, relaxed body, and concise robe folds are distinctive; the Y-shaped drapery emphasizing the thighs especially reflects the style of Kaikei’s school. Sendai City’s temple guide introduces the image as bearing an inscription dated 1221. A Tangible Cultural Property of Miyagi Prefecture, it remains the principal image of Amidaji, a temple associated with Ippen, founder of the Ji school. Because no official regular viewing schedule for the original image has been confirmed, advance contact with the temple is recommended.
