Description

Yakushi Nyorai is enshrined as the hidden principal image of the Yakushi Hall at Mutsu Kokubunji in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai. Mutsu Kokubunji was founded in the Nara period under Emperor Shomu’s decree establishing provincial temples. The present Yakushi Hall was rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1607 on the former site of the ancient lecture hall. Yakushi Nyorai is enshrined inside a zushi on the shumidan altar, flanked by Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu. The doors are normally kept closed, but the principal image is unveiled every February 11 during the Nanokado Shushoe ceremony. As the temple’s principal image, it carries forward a tradition of faith dating back to ancient Mutsu Kokubunji and receives prayers for recovery from illness and good health.
