Description

Ryōan-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Myōshin-ji school, known worldwide for the abstract beauty of its rock garden and registered as part of the World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Its principal image is Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha), enshrined in the Buddha Hall. Looking beyond the celebrated garden toward the temple’s devotional center reveals Ryōan-ji not only as a masterpiece of landscape design, but also as a living place of Zen faith and practice.
