Description

Enzō-ji’s main sanctuary enshrines Fukuman Kokūzō Bosatsu (Ākāśagarbha), regarded as one of Japan’s three renowned Kokūzō images. The temple was founded, according to tradition, by the monk Tokuitsu in 807, and the principal image is attributed to Kūkai. Kokūzō embodies boundless wisdom, compassion, merit, and good fortune, and is especially revered as the lifelong guardian of people born in the years of the Ox and Tiger. Overlooking the Tadami River, the temple brings this ancient devotion together with the Akabeko legend and the vigorous Nanokadō Hadaka-mairi rite.
