DescriptionSurrounded by cedar trees in Sasano, Yonezawa, Sasano Kannon Hall is the 19th temple of the Okitama 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and enshrines a Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Kannon Bosatsu. The present hall was rebuilt in 1843 by Narinori, the 13th head of the Uesugi family, and is notable for its thick thatched roof and elaborate carvings covering the outer sanctuary and entrance canopy. Around 2,000 hydrangeas brighten the grounds in early summer, and the temple is closely connected with the local tradition of Sasano Ittobori woodcarving. The site brings together Kannon’s compassion and the powerful, splendid craftsmanship of Okitama artisans.
