DescriptionZokoin, set in the mountains of Kurogamo in Shirataka, enshrines the sokushinbutsu of Mt. Yudono ascetic Komyokai Shonin. According to local tradition, he entered final meditation after leaving instructions that he should be exhumed one hundred years later so that he might become a sokushinbutsu, and he was later exhumed in accordance with that tradition. In the quiet Main Hall surrounded by a mountain stream and deep greenery, visitors can confront the ascetic’s resolve to seek salvation for others and a distinctive faith preserved in the Okitama region.
