DescriptionHonmyoji in Higashiiwamoto, Tsuruoka, preserves the living tradition of Mt. Yudono worship and enshrines Honmyokai Shonin, who became a sokushinbutsu through severe ascetic disciplines, including mokujiki dietary practice and abstention from grains. He is considered the oldest of the six surviving sokushinbutsu in the Shonai region and remains in comparatively well-preserved condition. Beside the Sokushinbutsu Hall is a nyujo mound said to mark the place where he entered final meditation underground. Surrounded by deep cedar woods, the temple offers a quiet encounter with an ascetic’s resolve to seek salvation for others and the depth of Yudono faith.
