Description

Kichijō-in, the third temple of the Mogami Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, preserves a National Important Cultural Property standing Kannon in its Oku-no-in. The 175-centimeter image was carved from a single zelkova trunk around the tenth century. Both arms below the shoulders are now missing, but surviving mortise holes indicate that it was originally a multi-armed Senju Kannon. Its broad face, substantial body, and traces of wave-pattern drapery preserve the dignity of early Heian sculpture. The sanctuary opens specially on August 10 and may also be viewed by advance arrangement.
