DescriptionNiwatsuki Kannon, formally Gattuzō-in, is the 33rd and final temple of the Mogami Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. Its hidden Shō Kannon is traditionally attributed to Ennin, while recent study indicates that the image was made about a thousand years ago and preserves features related to the sacred Kannon of Enryaku-ji’s Yokawa Chūdō. In the Oizuri-dō, generations of pilgrims have left their white pilgrimage robes and staffs after completing the circuit. Beside the clear Sake River, the temple gives physical form to the relief, gratitude, and fulfilled vows that conclude a long journey.
