DescriptionThe Golden Hall of Shozenin stands in Toge, the gateway settlement to Mt. Haguro, and is designated a Important Cultural Property. Its principal images are thirty-three statues of Sho Kannon Bosatsu—three seated and thirty standing figures. Around eighty other sacred images, including Dainichi Nyorai and Amida Nyorai, preserve the faith of the Three Mountains of Dewa from before the separation of Shinto and Buddhism; walking through the hall evokes a pilgrimage to Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono. The many statues create a solemn space where visitors can encounter the prayers and deep history of Haguro Shugendo.
