DescriptionShōzen-in’s Kogane-dō, a National Important Cultural Property, is the oldest surviving building within the sacred precincts of Mount Haguro. Its principal sacred group consists of thirty-three Shō Kannon images: three large seated figures surrounded by thirty life-size standing figures. Tradition associates the hall with a foundation ordered by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1193. Many additional Buddhist images form a three-dimensional mandala of the Dewa Sanzan, allowing worshippers to symbolically retrace a pilgrimage to Mounts Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono within the hall.
