Description

Chūren-ji is a major temple of Mount Yudono devotion and the 31st temple of the Shōnai Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. Its main hall enshrines the sokushinbutsu of Tetsumonkai Shōnin, an ascetic revered for spreading the Yudono faith and working for the relief of ordinary people. The hall also contains a rare Shō Kannon traditionally formed from incense ash, zodiac guardian deities, and ceiling paintings by contemporary artists. In the remote mountain settlement of Ōami, the preserved body, sacred images, and view toward Mount Gassan reveal the intense discipline and compassionate purpose of Yudono asceticism.
