Description

Zenpo-ji’s Five Hundred Rakan Hall was built in 1855 through donations from merchants enriched by the Kitamaebune shipping trade. The registered historic building contains 531 Rakan, or arhats, with no two figures sharing the same face, posture, or robe pattern. At the front stand the Shaka Triad and Ten Great Disciples; the Wind and Thunder Gods appear above the columns, while the Four Heavenly Kings guard the four directions. Within this extraordinary assembly, individual expressions make the Buddhist saints feel vividly human, while the scale of the hall preserves the maritime faith and generosity of generations.
