DescriptionEryū-ji’s Important Cultural Property Tachiki Kannon Hall enshrines an 8.5-meter-tall standing Jūichimen Senju Kannon (Eleven-Headed, Thousand-Armed Kannon), one of Japan’s largest wooden Buddhist images. Tradition holds that it was carved directly from a great tree while its roots remained in the earth, giving rise to the name Tachiki Kannon, the “Living-Tree Kannon.” The Twenty-Eight Guardian Deities and the Wind and Thunder Gods are also enshrined in the hall. As one of the Three Korori Kannon of Aizu, the temple combines monumental scale with a warm, approachable tradition of prayer.
