DescriptionChionji, an old temple at Amanohashidate, is known as one of Japan’s three great Monju temples. Its Monjudo Hall enshrines Monju Bosatsu, revered as a Buddha of wisdom. The principal image is secret and cannot normally be viewed directly, but worship at the hall connects visitors with a long tradition of prayers for wisdom. For generations, the deity has been cherished by visitors to Amanohashidate as a presence that illuminates learning and one’s path forward.
