DescriptionShōjō-ji’s Yakushi Hall, also known as the Central Aizu Yakushi Hall, houses the National Treasure Yakushi Triad: a seated Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) flanked by standing Nikkō and Gakkō Bodhisattvas. Carved in the early Heian period, the substantial, powerfully modeled figures are among the finest surviving examples of ancient Buddhist sculpture in northeastern Japan. Their imposing presence is joined by prayers for healing and relief from suffering. Advance reservations are required to view the images, allowing visitors to encounter the depth of Aizu’s Buddhist culture in a quiet setting.
