Description

Shinshōgokuraku-ji, commonly known as Shinnyo-dō, enshrines a standing Amida Nyorai as its hidden principal image. Known as Unazuki no Mida, the “Nodding Amida,” the image is linked to a legend in which Amida nodded three times when asked to leave Mount Hiei and save all people, especially women. Although the temple is celebrated for autumn foliage, the main hall preserves a deep sense of Tendai devotion and the gentle assurance of Amida’s compassion.
