DescriptionThe Tō-ji Treasure Museum houses an Important Cultural Property: the nearly six-meter-tall standing image of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon), formerly the principal image of the Jikidō (Dining Hall). For more than a thousand years it was revered as Tō-ji’s Kannon until the hall was damaged by fire in 1930; after restoration, the image was installed in the museum. Distinct from the sculptural mandala of the Lecture Hall and the Yakushi Triad of the Kondō, it conveys quiet depth and compassion as a sacred image preserved through disaster.
