DescriptionKanchi-in, a subtemple of Tō-ji, was established as an academy for Shingon Buddhism and served as a major center of esoteric Buddhist scholarship. Its principal images are the Five Great Kokūzō Bodhisattvas, deities of wisdom seated above a lion, elephant, horse, peacock, and garuḍa. Their presence reflects Kanchi-in’s historic role as a place where learning and devotion were inseparable. In contrast to the grand mandala of Tō-ji’s Lecture Hall, Kanchi-in offers a quieter encounter with the depth of study and prayer.
