Description

The Main Hall of Tōfuku-ji, serving as both Buddha Hall and Dharma Hall, enshrines a standing Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha) flanked by Mahākāśyapa and Ānanda. The imposing building forms the center of the vast Zen monastic complex and conveys disciplined stillness and dignity. After the former Buddha Hall and Dharma Hall were destroyed by fire in 1881, construction of the present hall began in 1917 and was completed in 1934.
