Description

The Hōjō of Kennin-ji, regarded as Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple, enshrines a seated Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Headed Kannon) donated by Tōfukumon-in about four centuries ago. Within the dignified simplicity of the Zen residence, the image conveys a quiet nobility. Together with the dry-landscape gardens and fusuma paintings, the space offers a distinctly Kyoto expression of Zen in which prayer and aesthetic refinement are inseparable.
