DescriptionLocated halfway up Mount Tennō, Hōshaku-ji is a historic temple of the Chisan school of Shingon Buddhism. Tradition holds that Gyōki founded it at the wish of Emperor Shōmu, and it is affectionately known as Takaradera. The main hall enshrines Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Headed Kannon), also called Hashikake Kannon, preserving the layers of faith and history associated with Yamazaki. In the calm atmosphere of this mountain temple, visitors can encounter Kannon’s compassion and the sense of deep time held by an ancient sanctuary.
