DescriptionHōkō-ji was founded to house the Great Buddha of Kyoto commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A colossal Great Buddha Hall once dominated this area, creating one of the capital’s grandest Buddhist spaces. The present hall enshrines a Rushana Buddha said to be one-tenth the size of the lost Great Buddha. Nearby hangs the Important Cultural Property bell bearing the inscriptions “Kokka Ankō” and “Kunshin Hōraku,” whose controversy became a prelude to the Siege of Osaka. The site quietly preserves both the grandeur and the downfall of the Toyotomi.
