Description

Shōrin-in is an ancient temple in Ōhara and a major center for the transmission of Ōhara-school Tendai shōmyō Buddhist chant. The main hall enshrines a seated Amida Nyorai known as Shōko no Amida, “Amida Who Bore Witness,” said to have emitted light during the Ōhara Debate in affirmation of Hōnen’s teaching. Here, the resonance of shōmyō chant and prayers for rebirth in the Pure Land come together, conveying Amida’s salvation and the stillness of Ōhara preserved through the centuries.
