Description

Tanukidani-san Fudō-in, a head temple of Shingon Shugendō on the mountainside of Ichijōji, enshrines a stone image of Fudō Myōō (Acala) within a cave. The present cliff-hanging main hall, completed in 1986, was built around the sacred grotto. The temple is widely visited for protection from misfortune, road safety, recovery from illness, and cancer-related prayers. The mountain climb and the mysterious cave setting convey the intensity of Fudō devotion and ascetic practice.
