DescriptionThe Amida Hall at Konkai Kōmyō-ji was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1605 and is the oldest surviving hall in the temple. Its Amida Buddha is traditionally regarded as the final work of the monk-sculptor Genshin, also known as Eshin Sōzu. Because the chisels he used were placed inside the image, it is called Otome no Nyorai—“the Buddha at which the chisel was laid to rest”—and Nomi-osame Nyorai. Within this head temple associated with Hōnen, the image conveys intimacy as well as quiet assurance.
