DescriptionRisshakuji’s Konpon Chudo enshrines a secret seated Yakushi Nyorai as its principal image. Traditionally unveiled once every 50 years, with the next opening expected around 2063, the image is normally protected deep inside its shrine. The hall stands at the beginning of the stone-step pilgrimage into Yamadera’s mountains and serves as a place to prepare one’s prayer before climbing. An eternal flame said to have been brought from Mt. Hiei burns inside, combining the peace of Yakushi devotion with the stillness and strength of an ascetic mountain.
