DescriptionThis unfinished monumental cliff-carved Buddhist image in Nikkeshi, Soma, Fukushima, was carved directly into a rocky hillside. Local Buddhist sculptor Yoshiaki Ara, after traveling widely, devoted more than thirty years to carving it alone under the resolve to create “one Buddha in one lifetime.” He died before completing it, but his aspiration was inherited by his descendants, and the work is now continued by fourth-generation sculptor Yonosuke Ara. The image remains a rare Buddhist spot still moving toward completion across generations.
