DescriptionA white Peace Kannon now stands beside a war memorial tower in the upper part of Maruyama Park on Mount Yunotake in Iwaki. The approximately 17-meter FRP figure began as the gilded Fujiwara Jibo Kannon, the principal landmark of the sightseeing attraction Iwaki Hotoke no Sato, which opened during the economic-bubble era. After the facility closed, local residents repainted the statue white and relocated it to its present setting. Its unusual second life transformed a commercial symbol into an image of remembrance for the war dead and a prayer for peace.
