Description

The Great Buddha of Miyo is an open-air bronze seated Amida Buddha at Kōsen-ji in Iwaki. Cast in 1778, the image measures 2.76 meters high and reaches 3.63 meters with its pedestal. Its elongated face bears a restrained smile, while inscriptions on the base record the circumstances of its creation and the names of makers and donors. Damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake, the city-designated cultural property was restored through local support. Its survival links Edo-period faith with the determination of the present community to preserve what it has inherited.
