DescriptionThe Amidado (Hall of Amida Buddha) at Nishi Hongwanji is a National Treasure completed in 1760. A wooden image of Amida Buddha occupies the central altar, accompanied by portraits of six of the Seven Pure Land Masters, with Hōnen and Prince Shōtoku in the side alcoves. Together with the vast Goeido (Founder’s Hall), it forms the devotional heart of the head temple of Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha. Its broad outer sanctuary and richly gilded inner space convey both grandeur and quiet reassurance.
