DescriptionThe Great Main Hall of Jōgi Nyorai Saihō-ji enshrines a hidden sacred hanging scroll of Amida Buddha, rather than a sculpted image. Originating at Mount Wutai in China, the scroll was brought to Japan through the prayers of Taira no Shigemori and later protected from pursuit by his retainer Taira no Sadayoshi after the fall of the Taira clan. According to tradition, it was enshrined over Sadayoshi’s grave, giving rise to the temple. Affectionately called Jōgi-san, this Amida devotion has remained a warm and accessible spiritual refuge for ordinary people for about eight centuries.
